Holllywood actor Sean Penn will be honoured at January's Palm Springs International Film Festival for his role in new film Milk.Milk is a biopic about the life of gay American politician Harvey Milk.

Penn, who is also tipped for an Oscar for his portrayal of the titular character, will receive the Desert Palm Achievement Award. Past recipients of this award include John Travolta and Daniel Day-Lewis.

Harvey Milk was probably the first out gay male politician in American history.

Known during his lifetime as The Mayor of Castro Street, he is a political icon among gay activists for his ability to build the LGBT community into a grassroots political force.Milk was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977.

In his 11 months in office he sponsored a gay rights bill and helped to defeat a proposition that would have seen openly gay and lesbian teachers sacked.

He was gunned down at City Hall by Dan White, a disgruntled former Supervisor, on November 27th 1978.

The Governor of California has said that a statewide ballot measure to ban gay marriage that passed last week is not the end of the matter.

Arnold Schwarzenegger voted against Proposition 8.With 100% of votes at polling stations counted, 5,424,916 (52.4%) voted in favour of a constitutional definition of marriage being between a man and woman. 4,832,086 (47.6%) voted against.More than 2m postal and absentee votes have yet to be counted. However, the campaign to stop Prop 8 has conceded defeat.

In an interview with CNN, the Governor said:

"It's unfortunate, obviously, but it's not the end. I think that we will again maybe undo that, if the court is willing to do that, and then move forward from there and again lead in that area."

There were large protest across California over the weekend. Some targeted Mormon and Catholic churches - both denominations donated funds to the Prop 8 campaign.

In May the state Supreme Court ruled that same-sex couples have the right to eqaul protection and could legally marry. Between June 17th election day on November 4th, more than 18,000 couples got married and it is thought they are still legally wed.

Last week the American Civil Liberties Union, Lambda Legal and the National Centre for Lesbian Rights filed a writ petition before the California Supreme Court urging the court to invalidate Proposition 8.

Σε δημοψήφισμα που διεξήχθη την περασμένη Τρίτη, ταυτόχρονα με τις προεδρικές εκλογές, το 52% των ψηφοφόρων της Καλιφόρνιας τάχθηκε υπέρ της απαγόρευσης των γάμων ομοφυλοφίλων. Ωστόσο, αμέσως μετά κατατέθηκαν τρεις αγωγές που υποστηρίζουν ότι η απαγόρευση είναι αντισυνταγματική γιατί με τον τρόπο αυτό γίνονται διακρίσεις σε βάρος των ομοφυλοφίλων. Την Κυριακή εκατοντάδες άνθρωποι διαδήλωσαν έξω από εκκλησίες που είχαν υποστηρίξει την απαγόρευση των γάμων.

«Είναι κρίμα, αλλά δεν είναι το τέλος», δήλωσε ο Σβαρτσενέγκερ σε συνέντευξη που παραχώρησε στο τηλεοπτικό δίκτυο CNN. «Πιστεύω ότι ίσως θα μπορέσουμε ξανά να το ανατρέψουμε, εάν το δικαστήριο διατίθεται να το κάνει, και κατόπιν να προχωρήσουμε εμπρός», πρόσθεσε. Προέβλεψε επίσης ότι δεν θα ακυρωθούν οι γάμοι των 18.000 ζευγαριών, ανδρών και γυναικών, που έχουν ήδη παντρευτεί.

Ταυτόχρονα όμως είχε πει ότι δεν θα τον ενοχλούσε η νομιμοποίηση αυτών των γάμων.

Maria Shriver, the wife of Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger, has publicly expressed her support for same-sex marriage in the state.

A ballot measure on election day, November 4th, seeks to ban gay and lesbians from getting married. Proposition 8 has the support of church groups in California and many Republican politicians.

"I believe in people's right to choose a partner that they love, and that's a decision that I have come to, and I have felt that way for a long time," said Ms Shriver, a niece of former President John F Kennedy. Her husband has also publicly opposed Proposition 8.

Computer giant Apple has declared Prop 8 a civil rights issue and donated $100,000 to the campaign to defeat it. Google has also publicly backed gay marriage.

"We strongly believe that a person's fundamental rights — including the right to marry — should not be affected by their sexual orientation," Apple said in a statement.

Last week a Public Policy Institute of California found Proposition 8 losing 52% to 44% among likely voters. 4% are undecided. In polls taken in August and September by the institute found double digit leads for opponents of the measure.

Proposition 8 would amend the state Constitution to "eliminate right of same-sex couples to marry."In May the California Supreme Court overturned a ban on same-sex marriages in the state.

The Court voted 4 to 3 to strike down the ban. Opponents of gay marriage raised more than a million signatures to place the initiative on the November ballot.

Hollywood star Brad Pitt has made a large donation to campaign fighting an attempt to ban gay marriage in California. His $100,000 (£54,840) to the campaign against Proposition 8 was announced yesterday. H Τήλος των 533 μόνιμων κατοίκων συμμετείχε σε καλλιτεχνικό διαγωνισμό, θα κέρδιζε διά περιπάτου το βραβείο «καλύτερου πρωτοεμφανιζόμενου». Σύμφωνα με πληροφορίες, ομοφυλοφιλικές οργανώσεις έχουν ήδη αρχίσει επαφές με τους φορείς του νησιού και αναζητούν χώρους «για πιο οργανωμένες δράσεις». Τις ομορφιές και τον «ντόρο» που ξέσπασε γύρω από την Τήλο φαίνεται ότι θέλουν να αξιοποιήσουν και παραγωγοί κινηματογραφικών ταινιών και τηλεοπτικών σειρών. Σύμφωνα με πληροφορίες, σε λίγο καιρό θα πραγματοποιηθούν στο νησί τα γυρίσματα ταινίας μικρού μήκους, ενώ οι συντελεστές γνωστού σίριαλ ιδιωτικού τηλεοπτικού σταθμού εξέτασαν το ενδεχόμενο να ταξιδέψουν στην Τήλο για το γύρισμα δύο επεισοδίων.
