Ο εγκέφαλος των ομοφυλόφιλων ανθρώπων παρουσιάζει δομικές ομοιότητες με τον εγκέφαλο του αντίθετου φύλου, δείχνει σουηδική μελέτη που βασίστηκε σε τομογραφίες.
Η σύγκριση 50 ομοφυλόφιλων και 40 ετεροφυλόφιλων ανδρών και γυναικών έδειξε ομοιότητες στη συμμετρικότητα των εγκεφαλικών ημισφαιρίων καθώς και σε μια περιοχή του εγκεφάλου που παίζει σημαντικό ρόλο στις συναισθηματικές αντιδράσεις.
Στους ετεροφυλόφιλους άνδρες και τις λεσβίες, τα εγκεφαλικά ημισφαίρια είναι συμμετρικά, ενώ στους γκέι άνδρες και τις ετεροφυλόφιλες γυναίκες το δεξί ημισφαίριο είναι ελαφρώς μεγαλύτερο, διαπίστωσαν οι ερευνητές του γνωστού Ινστιτούτου Καρολίνσκα της Στοκχόλμης.
Όπως αναφέρει το AFP, ομοιότητες μεταξύ των ομοφυλόφιλων ανδρών και των ετεροφυλόφιλων γυναικών εντοπίστηκαν επίσης στις συνδέσεις της αμυγδαλής του εγκεφάλου, η οποία μεταξύ άλλων ρυθμίζει τις συναισθηματικές αντιδράσεις σε εξωτερικά ερεθίσματα.
Η αιτία της ανατομικής ομοιότητας παραμένει άγνωστη, ωστόσο οι επιστήμονες θεωρούν απίθανο να οφείλεται στις εμπειρίες ή τον τρόπο ζωής.
«Οι παρατηρήσεις αυτές δεν μπορούν εύκολα να αποδοθούν στην αντίληψη ή τη συμπεριφορά» γράφουν οι ερευνητές στο Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.
